Walk 32 Miles. Anywhere In The World. Over 16 Days.

Walk 32 miles. Anywhere in the world. Over 16 days.

The Great Saunter Fall Challenge offers you the chance to test your mettle by walking 32 miles over the course of 16 days in October. This year, the Challenge also lets you help support one of the most beautiful parks we walk through on our iconic Great Saunter –  Shorewalkers will donate all registration fees to Hudson River Park.

Walk the Fall Challenge anywhere you like, anywhere in the world.  Just like on the Great Saunter, you’ll cover 32 miles, but at your own pace – all in one day or spread out over the 16 days. Whichever path and pace you choose, you’ll have both met the Challenge and made a difference in keeping a great park clean, green, and safe.

For the Great Saunter, everyone meets in NYC to walk the 32 miles together in one day. For the Great Saunter Fall Challenge, you walk the 32 miles wherever you are in the world over a 16-day period. You can complete the Challenge in one day or spread it over multiple days.

What do we get for signing up for the Great Saunter Fall Challenge?2023-07-05T17:14:52-05:00

Before the Challenge begins, we’ll email you a link for a printable walk bib that you can customize with a number or name. When is the Great Saunter Fall Challenge?2023-07-05T17:16:55-05:00

The Great Saunter Fall Challenge will be held between September 30 and October 15, 2023 — a great time of year to be out walking, no matter WHERE on the planet you live.

Are there any limitations about when I walk?2023-07-05T17:18:24-05:00

None at all. You can fit the Great Saunter Fall Challenge into your schedule. If you want to split the 32-miles into two days, four days, or even 16 days, it’s completely up to you.

How do I post photos to social media as I’m Sauntering?2023-07-05T17:20:44-05:00

To foster community and share accomplishments, we encourage participants to post their Great Saunter Fall Challenge hikes during the Sept 30-Oct 15 window using the hashtag #saunterchallenge, tagging @shorewalkers on Facebook, Shorewalkers_NY on Instagram, and @ShorewalkersNY on Twitter and when doing so, tell us where you walked.

How do I submit my proof of miles to get my certificate?2023-07-05T17:22:25-05:00

As this is not a race, we abide by the honor system – you do not need to email proof that you completed the 32 miles. Tally your miles in whatever fashion is easiest for you – via an app or with pen & paper.  You’ll receive an email with a link to download your finisher certificate.  If you do NOT receive this email, simply contact us at greatsaunter@gmail.com and we’ll send a link for the download your way!

Why are our registration fees going to support Hudson River Park?2023-07-29T11:02:48-05:00

Part of Shorewalkers’ mission is the preservation of New York City’s waterfront. The four-mile Hudson River Park is a critical part of that waterfront as well as one of the parks we pass through on the Great Saunter route. We are happy to be supporting the park in its 25th Anniversary year.

Not part of NYC Parks, Hudson River Park relies on private funds for programming, maintenance, and operations. Our donation, which we will present at the end of the Great Saunter Fall Challenge, will be earmarked for a tree-replacement project.
