For the first event, we will be meeting at the SE most corner of the Park, quickly enter the park, head North, across and back down again to Central Park South. We will aim for about a 3mph pace. Manhattan: Statues, Monuments and Buildings of Lower Manhattan

Moderate walking, a few stairs, about five or six hours.. We will look at all of the statues in Battery Park, especially the John Ericsson statue. This statue was moved a few years ago. John is looking at Bridge Street instead of the park and the harbor. We the Shorewalker’s Art Committee will decide whether or not we should suggest that the New York City Art and Antiquities Department turn the statue to face into the park and the harbor. We will visit the Alexander Hamilton Custom House and the beautiful Native American Indian art inside. We will also visit other builds. Bring lunch and water.. We will walk rain or shine. Call Friday evening until 9:00 PM, if weather is a question. Leader: Tom McBreen— (516) 812-0156. Check the Shorewalker’s calendar for possible changes.

Lost Carmansville, Upper Manhattan, Guided History Walk

Lost Carmansville, Upper Manhattan, Guided History Walk

Our walk will focus on the lost village of Carmansville and the man who developed the village, Richard Carman. We’ll start the walking tour in the area where Carmansville once existed along the Hudson and visit the Carman family plot at Trinity Cemetery. Then, we’ll walk on a route that Richard Carman himself might have walked from the village to his home on the Harlem River in what is now Highbridge Park (his house itself is no longer standing, but we can visit where it once was). We’ll stop for a short break outside the home of Carman’s neighbor, Eliza Jumel, at the Morris Jumel Mansion. We can use the restrooms in the Mansion, but we won’t tour the house on this walk. Most of the walk is on sidewalks, but the cemetery section includes some uneven surfaces and steep inclines. We’ll keep an easy pace, but please note the walk includes hills and some sets of stairs. Drop-out points are throughout the walk, and the leader can point you to the nearest subway station. Meeting Location: 157th and Broadway. On the southwest corner of the intersection, there is a small triangular plaza with benches – we will meet there.
