Hike Leader Profile: Diane Cimine Member since 2016 & Hike Leader since 2017

Where did you lead your first walk for Shorewalkers?

I joined Shorewalkers in the spring of 2016 to both train for and walk the Great Saunter. I had such a blast on my first 18-mile walk with Nick DiNapoli that I realized I had found a new home, combining my love of walking with discovering new places and meeting great people.

After co-leading an Audubon Mural walk in Manhattan with Nick in 2017, I led my first solo walk in Jersey City to view the recently launched Jersey City Mural Arts Program. I had recently moved there and was wowed by how the art was transforming the neighborhoods.

What types of walks do you enjoy leading?

I love leading walks with a theme – whether it’s history, like my Women’s History Month walks in March, Street Art installations or to attend a music event, like SummerFest in Liberty State Park or the annual Charlie Parker Festival in Marcus Garvey Park.

What is a favorite trail or park to walk?

I enjoy taking members around Liberty State Park in Jersey City – especially into the nature preserve when it’s open or at sunset for the spectacular views. It’s easily accessible from lower Manhattan yet many have never been, and it’s a true ‘shore walk’.I enjoy taking members around Liberty State Park in Jersey City – especially into the nature preserve when it’s open or at sunset for the spectacular views. Where can we find you when you’re not walking?

I’ve run a small communication’s business since 2001 and have been a yoga teacher since 2003. I also volunteer at the Red Door Community (formerly Gilda’s Club) which serves those managing through cancer.

What else should we know about you?

“Solvitur ambulando” is a Latin phrase I live by: It is solved by walking.  My father was an avid walker and would take my sister and I for walks that began at remote subway stops in NYC to explore the different neighborhoods. Sound familiar?!  I’m also a two-time cancer survivor, which propelled me to walk the Portuguese Camino this past spring, perhaps my favorite hike of all!
