We were in a small group—just seven of us on a perfect fall day. The sun lit up the red, orange, and yellow leafed trees mixed with those still green. We were able to get to all three lakes and parks. Starting with some Forest Hills history, we were reminded that Flushing Meadows Corona Park, a former wetland, ash dump (as in Fitzgerald’s “Valley of Ashes”) hosted the 1939-1940 and 1964-1965 World’s Fairs. In this park, one of the city’s largest, one finds soccer, boating (in warmer weather), bike riding, model plane flying, even cricket. Close by is Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. And beyond the Queens Botanical Garden, there are community gardens. While the usual stacked turtles were not sunning on the rocks, we were rewarded in finding a rare nesting swan with three eggs on the shore of Lake Kissena.

Maybe soon we will be able to renew our former (optional) walk ending– with dim sum
