1.5 hours at easy pace with optional extension at own pace. (Please note: This is a repeat of the October 1 trip to Governors Island.)

https://govisland.com/map

Part One: Guided history walk of the island. Easy pace.

We’ll be among the first to enjoy the island during the autumn as 2017 is the first year Governors Island is open to the public through October. Rhonda Heise Asher (volunteer with the Friends of Governors Island) will lead the 1.5 hour tour – especially designed for Shorewalkers – and will cover both the history and the new developments of the island. Terrain is mostly flat, ending at a big hill that is optional (though it offers the best views of New York Harbor!).

Part Two: Optional extension at your own pace. After the guided tour, Shorewalkers may head back to the ferry or extend the walk with a hike around the circumference of the island at their preferred pace.

Meeting Location: Governors Island, Soissons Landing Welcome Center, north side of island. Hike leader Rhonda Heise Asher will meet the group at the large map. You’ll see the map at the top of stairs to your left as you arrive on Governors Island from the Manhattan ferry.

Meeting time: 11:15am.

Directions: Take the Governors Island Ferry that departs lower Manhattan at 11:00am from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street, just east of the Staten Island ferry terminal). Allow time for first-come/first-served boarding.Fare: The 11:00 ferry is free. (The return ride from Governors Island is also free.)

For ferry info: https://govisland.com/info/ferry

Water/Food: Bring water. Since it’s late in the season, food to purchase on the island may be limited. It’s wise to bring your own snack/lunch.

Weather: In case of iffy weather, cancellation will be posted by 8:00 am on the day of the walk.

PACE: Brisk!  This is a series of Friday nights in Van Cortlandt Park backwoods. We had such a blast last time walking in the woods with flashlights and then getting dinner as a group, I thought I'd go for a repeat. We will aim to cover 3-4 miles at a BRISK pace, so we will aim to be out of the park in just over an hour. BRING A FLASHLIGHT!!! I will bring an extra one just in case. Wear hiking boots as we will be on nature trails. We will decide which trails we want to visit on the spot - but I think we'll either head to the Northwest Woods or go for the Croton Woods again. Afterwards, anyone who wants can stick around for a group dinner on Broadway - there are many places to choose from.  There are restrooms and places to buy water at the meeting point. In case of rain, we cancel.

If you can't make it, please un-RSVP in time. If you are running late, please text me. I'll tell you how to catch up with us. Although if you are running more than 10 minutes late and don't know the park too well, it will be hard for you to catch up - we will disappear into the depths of the park almost right away.

MEET: 6PM at 242nd street (last stop of 1 train) on the East side of Broadway by the park entrance. Check for weekend subway route changes here: MTA Weekender (http://web.mta.info/weekender.html).  Contact hike leader directly if you have questions about the hike.

About 15 miles and 6 to 7 hours.

We'll take the 9:15 AM Route 9W Rockland Coach bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the New York-New Jersey state line at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and walk south to and across the George Washington bridge.

Usually we walk north and take the bus south, this time we'll walk our way south into the sun setting on New York as it heads for warmer southern locales.

The bus will arrive at the state line around 10:00 AM. We'll stop for an early rest break at the State Line cafe, then at the Park headquarters, then take a break at Alpine Lookout, Rockefeller Lookout, and the Sunoco station, then cross the George Washington Bridge to Manhattan.

Most of the leaves should be off the trees by this time, so we'll have wide views across Westchester and New York city. It could be windy along the cliffs, so bring layers to wear, and the trail could get muddy, so hiking shoes would be better than sneakers.

This hike has beautiful views along the Hudson River; it also has some steep hills, trails with rocks, tree roots, branches and fallen trees that must be walked, climbed or clambered over and very few drop off points. Also see the park advisory regarding ticks, snakes and poison ivy: Palisades Park Advisory (http://www.njpalisades.org/pdfs/advisory.pdf).

To drop off the hike early, you will need to catch the bus along Route 9W. There is a bus every hour, it makes limited stops and there are limited access points to Route 9 along the hike, if you want to leave early let me know and we can plan your escape. The bus stops are noted on the park map: Palisades Park map (http://www.njpalisades.org/pdfs/brochureColor.pdf)

Here is the bus schedule: Rockland Coach Route 9W (http://web.coachusa.com/CoachUsaAssets/files/97/route09w.pdf)

Meet: 8:45 AM at the commuter statues in the ticket area of the South Wing of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Buy one way ticket on Rockland Coach to State Line at the Lamont-Doherty Eath Observatory. The fare will be around $10.00.
