We will stop to eat lunch at a park just past Pelham Parkway; there are nearby delis, restaurants and fast food joints, or bring your own and eat in the park.

Moderate pace, about 6 - 7 miles, will take about 3-4 hours. First half - street walking, mostly flat with just a few hills, second half – nature trail, dirt surface, all flat. Bird watching opportunities – feel free to bring binoculars – they might come in handy in Van Cortlandt Park. We will MEET at the Church of the Mediator at the corner of West 231st Street and Kingsbridge Avenue at 10am.

We will be tracing part of the historical route of the now-underground Mosholu River, better known as Tibbetts Brook. Our walk will center around the part of Kingsbridge that, not too long ago, was comprised of two separate islands – Marble Hill and Paparinemin Islands.

During the first half of the walk, we will see street topography that gives away the presence of the river underneath, the places where waterways were artificially restructured or tucked underground, and where traces of the historical riparian zone survive and slowly reclaim their own. We will see where the oldest bridge in New York – King's Bridge - still remains (though it is not standing, but is buried underground).

During the second half, we will walk through nature trails in Van Cortladnt Park where the Mosholu River, though much reduced in size, still flows wild and free alongside the Putnam Trail and the freshwater wetlands provide ample wildlife watching opportunities.

We will MEET at the Church of the Mediator at the corner of West 231st Street and Kingsbridge Avenue. If travelling on the 1 train, get off at 231st street, walk two blocks West from Broadway. The church is on the SE corner of the intersection. There is a farmer's market in the church courtyard where you can buy fruit and snacks for the walk. For Metronorth - the closest station is Spuyten Duyvil on 225th street.

General overview of the route: We will walk past the oldest tree in the Bronx through Kingsbridge and part of Spuyten Duyvil to the Broadway Bridge at 225th street, cross over to Bailey Avenue via Exterior Street and up to Tibbetts Tail Park. There are places to buy water and food on 230th Street and Bailey. (Restrooms at Tibbetts Tail Park.) From Bailey, you can walk to Broadway for 238th and 242nd street subway stations and several Bx buses.

From there, we will walk down to Van Cortlandt Park and walk the Putnam and John Kieran nature trails. Restrooms and vending machines available by the lake. 242nd street subway station accessible from here.

At the northern boundary, the Putnam Trail connects to the South County Trail in Yonkers, the John Muir Trail and OCA in the Northeast Woods of Van Cortlandt.

We will walk back to 242nd street on the Putnam Trail and end the walk at the Van Cortlandt House Museum, which is free and offers trail maps and a museum plan.

From here, you can access the subway (242nd st), places to eat on Broadway or, for a truly splashy finish, you can check out the free swimming pool just south of the museum. You can also join me for the most authentic bakery experience in the city at Lloyd's Carrot Cake just across Broadway.

I plan to walk rain or shine, unless it's an apocalyptic downpour. Please text or email me the night before or early the morning of in case of rain.

Join us on August 5, 2017 for a  9 mile 3 to 4 hour walk up the Old Croton Aqueduct starting at the Glenwood train station in Yonkers.  After a short walk up Glenwood Ave, we'll pick up the Aqueduct Trail and head north through Yonkers, Hastings, and into Dobbs Ferry, for a short break at the Aqueduct keepers house. Bathrooms are available here.  Continuing up the Trail we'll pass through Dobbs Ferry and Irvington before emerging on Route 9 and heading up into Tarrytown. The walk will end at the Tarrytown MetroNorth station.

The Aqueduct follows the Hudson line, and there are drop off points in each town along the way. I'd bring water, but there are shops in Dobbs Ferry, about a block off the Trail if you need to purchase  some. There are many fine cafes and restaurants in Tarrytown for lunch at the end of the walk or bring a lunch and eat in Pierson Park, on the Hudson Riverwalk with views overlooking the New New York Bridge. Return to Grand Central on the train from Tarrytown. There are 3 trains per hour and the fare is approximately $10.75.

Meeting: Take the 8:20 out of Grand Central to the Glenwood Station. The fare is approximately $8.25.  We'll meet at the Glenwood Station at 9 am.
