Hudson River Museum and Untermyer Gardens

About 5 miles and 5 hours at moderate pace on mostly flat trails with one relatively steep trail ascent of about one-half mile.

We'll take the Metro-North Hudson Line train to Glenwood, visit the Hudson Rover Museum to see Walks With Artists: The Hudson Valley and Beyond, then walk on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail to Untermyer Gardens, then continue north on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail to Hastings on Hudson, where we will catch the train back to the city.

Meet: 12:00 p.m. at the Hudson River Museum, 511 Warburton Avenue, Yonkers. Take the Hudson Line train from Grand Central at 11:20 a.m. ($8.25 one-way) or from Harlem/125th Street at 11:30 a.m. ($8.25 one-way) or from Marble Hill at 11:42 a.m. ($1.50 one-way) or from Riverdale at 11:48 a.m. ($1.50 one-way) to the Glenwood station, arriving at 11:56 a.m. The hike leader is getting on at Marble Hill. From the station, we walk one block up Glenwood Avenue, turn left on to Ravine Avenue, at the end of Ravine Avenue enter Trevor Park and follow path to museum entrance. We will stay at the museum until about 1:30, which will give time to view the Walks with Artists exhibit, and the Hudson Riverama, an excellent exhibit of Hudson River nature and history; and the wonderfully overdone period rooms of the 1877 Glenview mansion decorated for the holidays. Museum admission is $7.00.

Bring food and drink and eat at the museum; there is a small area in the lobby with tables and chairs, or if the weather is nice eat outside. The gift shop has a very small selection of snacks and beverages and that is the only opportunity to buy food on this walk.

Around 1:30 we will leave the museum and walk north on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail to Untermyer Gardens, a 43 acre park with formal gardens, statuary, and expansive views of the Hudson River and the Palisades. Read about the gardens here: The aqueduct trail is level, but there is a relatively steep ascent of about one-half mile from the aqueduct trail to the gardens.

After viewing the gardens we will continue north on the OCA to Hastings on Hudson and catch the train back to the city. There are trains leaving Hastings at :24 and :55 past the hour, we will try for the 4:55. Fare is $9.25 back to Grand Central.
