 27 miles, moderate pace, 12 hours. Start at Brooklyn Bridge, end at GW Bridge. We’ll walk over all of the bridges on which one can leave Manhattan Island by foot. Bring Metrocard for 2 or 3 bus/subway rides (in addition to the 27 miles of walking.) Bring plenty of water & lunch. Heavy rain at start cancels.

Rockfeller Preserve 6 miles, moderate pace. Travel along historical carriage roads and gentle rolling hills with beautiful vistas. Hiking boots a MUST. Take the Metro North train from Grand Central Terminal to Tarrytown arriving at 9:29 am. Hike starts at 10am. Rain cancel. Drivers meet train at Tarrytown station. Preserve parking $6. EAST RIVER SHOREWALK About 4 miles. Bring water lunch, sunhat and sunscreen. Take # 6 train to 68th Street and Lexington Ave. to make sure walk is on.

Itinerary: From the Rec Center to Wards Island pedestrian bridge at 103rd St. Continue to view Hell-Gate,salt marshes, Mill Rock Island, Icahn Stadium,hidden ponds and recent efforts at conservation and restoration of the tidal wetlands. Return via pedestrian bridge.  Duration: approx 3 hrs and distance 5 miles. Need to Know: Rain cancels. Bring liquids/snacks. Lunch in East Harlem (optional) .

MEET: 9:30am  Directions: M-15 bus or IRT #6 to 110th St Station (walk east to 1st Ave.).Meet-Up at Thomas Jefferson Rec Center, First Avenue and East 112 Street.

(59^th St to 120^th St). Moderate walking, some hills, about four to five hours.   We will walk up Broadway to Lincoln Center over to the Riverside Drive statues and to Grant’s Tomb. We will end in Columbia University. Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens.  Heavy rain cancels.

ROCKLAND LAKE TO NYACK – 7 miles, moderate pace with climbs on the Long Path. The Hook Mountain Ridgeline and subsequent deer runs, return to Nyack for an optional dinner and/or visit to the Edward Hopper Gallery. Bring lunch and water. MEET Port Authority Bus Terminal, South Wing before 8:45AM at the White Commuter Statues. Departure: 9:15 am, bus 9A/gate 220, O/W to Rockland Lake, N.Y. In our first joint hike sponsored by CIVITAS., an environmental organization dedicated to the preservation of NYC waterfront, we join in a series of evening walking tours on Roosevelt Island led by urbanist Sharon Pope. Ride the iconic Roosevelt Island Tram across the East River for spectacular views of the river, Manhattan and Queens. The tour will explore the first residential buildings as envisioned by Mayor John Lindsay and architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, as well as Goldwater Hospital, site of the proposed Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute.

Take Metro North (Hudson Line) from Grand Central to Cold Spring and MEET approx. 11AM (time depends on what the new train schedule will show for train arrivals before or close to 11AM) at the parking area south side of train station, for transport to the island. Bring photo ID. Expect entrance fee of $10, covering free boat rides, guided walks, or independent exploration. Amenities include shaded picnic groves, public restrooms, a gift shop in the historic Warner House, walking trails, and a hot dog vendor. Departure time is optional.(*Alternatively, meet at 10AM at parking lot at North White Plains Train Station for car pooling. Donate $5 to the driver. Pace easy, some hills. Distance 8 miles, duration 5 to 6 hours. Walk through Erie-Lackawanna Terminal, beautiful views of Manhattan’s westside, magnificent 100 year old buildings, Castle Point Terrace (Stevens University), Sibyl’s Cave, the Hoboken Historical Museum and of course the memories and sites of Frank Sinatra. Walking south we will go to Jersey City and walk along the Hudson River to Newport Piers, Harborside area, Paulus Hook the Colgate Clock and back to Manhattan via the Exchange Place Path Station.  Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens. MEET at 10:00AM, Greeley Square (6^th Avenue and 33^rd Street, Manhattan). This is the Manhattan entrance to the Path Train at 33^rd Street. Fare on the Path Train is $2.25 each way. Visit an area of New York City where the surfs live better than you do. 3 easy miles. Learn what a F.P.O.A. is. No smoking on trip. PALISADES-10 miles at a moderate to brisk pace. Mostly level terrain, mild hills and a range of up and down rock steps. Hike passes through elements of the Long Path by State-Line, Tallman Mountain State Park and Piermont. Optional dinner in Piermont. Bring lunch and water. MEET: Port Authority Bus Terminal, south wing by the White Commuter Statues before 8:45am. Bus departs 9:15am, O/W to Closter Dock Road, NJ (bus 9A, gate 220) arriving 10:00am. 10 miles, Moderate Pace, Flat Terrain.Take A train to Broadchannel. Change at Broadchannel for S Train to Beach 116^th Street. Please allow ample time to make the subway connections. Walk from Beach 116^th street to Beach 5^th Street and return. Convenient dropout points to get subway, if you don’t want to do entire walk.  Bring lunch & water. Lunch and swim at Beach 5^th Street. Eat lunch on beach or boardwalk. Rain cancels. Please call or email to make sure that walk is on. There is a possibility that I might have to change this walk to a different location. Seventh in a series of about a dozen hikes crossing the Garden State.  Walk on streets and through parks from MetroPark RR Station to Rahway, then mostly along the Rahway River Greenway to Cranford.  Bring lunch, snacks and water.  10-14 essentially flat miles at a moderately brisk pace on city streets and trails.  E-mail or phone leader a week before the hike for meeting time and place.  Joint Hike. Awful or dangerous weather cancels.  Contact leader after 7:00 AM morning of hike if uncertain.

Saturday, September 7, 2013 (Two hikes)

(Hike 1) 8 miles, level rock-strewn trails and several hills. We parallel Pine Brook and Stoney Brook trails, for extended lunch on a rock shelf at the banks of Lake Sebago. The Dutch Doc Trail Shelter and Claudius Smith Cave are points of interest on the trek to Tuxedo. Bring lunch and water. MEET:  at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, south wing (40^th Street and 8^th Avenue) at the white commuter statues before 8:45 AM. Bus departs: 9:10 AM. O/W  to Cloister Dock Road, NJ (bus 9A, gate 220) arriving 10:07 AM. Bus also available at George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal at 9:40 AM. Distance. 3-4 miles. Located on 500 acres in the Hudson River Valley, walk and/or take a tram tour among the monumental sculptors of Calder, Smith, and Noguchi. Relaxed walking, child friendly/stroller friendly, level ground, four to five hours. MEET:  10:00AM at New York Public Library (5th Avenue and 42^nd Street). Following the path of the “water system” we will walk up Fifth Avenue to Central Park and enter the Park at 60^th Street and end the walk at High Bridge Tower (Amsterdam Avenue and 173th Street). Nyack to  Haverstraw. A moderately paced hike of about 10 miles along the Long Path. We take a bus from the George Washington bus station at 175th. st. to Upper Nyack and follow thw L.P. to  Haverstraw.. Bring lunch and something to drink. If time allows, we will take a ferry from Haverstraw to Ossining and return to the city by Metro North train; otherwise, we will take a bus from Haverstraw to return.
