 27 miles, moderate pace, 12 hours. Start at Brooklyn Bridge, end at GW Bridge. We’ll walk over all of the bridges on which one can leave Manhattan Island by foot. Bring Metrocard for 2 or 3 bus/subway rides (in addition to the 27 miles of walking.) Bring plenty of water & lunch. Heavy rain at start cancels.

Itinerary: From the Rec Center to Wards Island pedestrian bridge at 103rd St. Continue to view Hell-Gate,salt marshes, Mill Rock Island, Icahn Stadium,hidden ponds and recent efforts at conservation and restoration of the tidal wetlands. In our first joint hike sponsored by CIVITAS., an environmental organization dedicated to the preservation of NYC waterfront, we join in a series of evening walking tours on Roosevelt Island led by urbanist Sharon Pope. Ride the iconic Roosevelt Island Tram across the East River for spectacular views of the river, Manhattan and Queens. The tour will explore the first residential buildings as envisioned by Mayor John Lindsay and architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, as well as Goldwater Hospital, site of the proposed Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute.

Take Metro North (Hudson Line) from Grand Central to Cold Spring and MEET approx. 11AM (time depends on what the new train schedule will show for train arrivals before or close to 11AM) at the parking area south side of train station, for transport to the island. Bring photo ID. Expect entrance fee of $10, covering free boat rides, guided walks, or independent exploration. Amenities include shaded picnic groves, public restrooms, a gift shop in the historic Warner House, walking trails, and a hot dog vendor. Departure time is optional.(*Alternatively, meet at 10AM at parking lot at North White Plains Train Station for car pooling. Donate $5 to the driver. Pace easy, some hills. Distance 8 miles, duration 5 to 6 hours. Walk through Erie-Lackawanna Terminal, beautiful views of Manhattan’s westside, magnificent 100 year old buildings, Castle Point Terrace (Stevens University), Sibyl’s Cave, the Hoboken Historical Museum and of course the memories and sites of Frank Sinatra. Walking south we will go to Jersey City and walk along the Hudson River to Newport Piers, Harborside area, Paulus Hook the Colgate Clock and back to Manhattan via the Exchange Place Path Station.  Bring lunch, water, binoculars or a camera with optical zoom lens. MEET at 10:00AM, Greeley Square (6th Avenue and 33rd Street, Manhattan). This is the Manhattan entrance to the Path Train at 33rd Street. Fare on the Path Train is $2.25 each way. 10 miles, Moderate Pace, Flat Terrain.Take A train to Broadchannel. Change at Broadchannel for S Train to Beach 116th Street. Please allow ample time to make the subway connections. Walk from Beach 116th street to Beach 5th Street and return. Convenient dropout points to get subway, if you don’t want to do entire walk.  Bring lunch & water. Lunch and swim at Beach 5th Street. Seventh in a series of about a dozen hikes crossing the Garden State.  Walk on streets and through parks from MetroPark RR Station to Rahway, then mostly along the Rahway River Greenway to Cranford.  Bring lunch, snacks and water.  10-14 essentially flat miles at a moderately brisk pace on city streets and trails.  E-mail or phone leader a week before the hike for meeting time and place.  Joint Hike. The Dutch Doc Trail Shelter and Claudius Smith Cave are points of interest on the trek to Tuxedo. Bring lunch and water. Nyack to  Haverstraw. A moderately paced hike of about 10 miles along the Long Path. We take a bus from the George Washington bus station at 175th. st. to Upper Nyack and follow thw L.P. to  Haverstraw.. Bring lunch and something to drink. If time allows, we will take a ferry from Haverstraw to Ossining and return to the city by Metro North train; otherwise, we will take a bus from Haverstraw to return.
