About 10 miles and 5 hours, moderate pace. We will meet outside of the Pelham Bay stop of the 6 train, walk into Pelham Bay Park, visit the Bartow Pell Mansion ($5 admission or just tour the gardens for free), walk around Hunter Island, eat lunch at Orchard Beach, stop on City island, explore Huntington Woods, then return to the 6 train Pelham Bay station.
When we get to the Bartow Pell Mansion, walkers who would like to go inside will have half an hour to tour the house; take a look at the mansion website to get some background before you go in Bartow-Pell Mansion. Walkers who do not want to go inside can tour the gardens, walk the grounds and relax in the shade.
We will visit City Island briefly but not stop there to eat. If you want to eat on City Island, you can split off from the group then walk back to the Pelham Bay station or take the Bx29; or, finish the hike with the group then take the Bx29 back to City Island for dinner.
Bring lunch, snacks, beverages. There is a CVS at the meeting point for snacks and beverages, there are food vendors of varying quality along the beach. Parts of the walk will have no shade, bring hat and sunscreen.
Meet: 10:30 a.m. outside the Pelham Bay station of the 6 train; take the 6 train or the Bx12 Express Bus, which runs from Inwood at Broadway and 207th Street along Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway and get off at the Pelham Bay 6 train station.
