Old Bronx Borough Courthouse Art Exhibit

UPDATE JUNE 19: THIS HIKE HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND RESCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY JULY 12.

Slow pace, about 7 miles and 5 hours. We will go to the No Longer Empty art exhibit at the Old Bronx Borough Court House.

We will start at the A,B,C,D station at 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in Manhattan then walk east across the 145th Street Bridge into the Bronx. If you want to meet us in the Bronx, be at East 150th Street under the Major Deegan Expressway at the entrance to Mill Pond Park by 12:30.

We'll walk north along the Harlem River through Mill Pond Park, cross through the Metro-North Station to Macombs Dam Park, pass by Yankee Stadium, view the Lorelei Fountain in Joyce Kilmer Park and continue along 161st Street to the iconic Old Bronx Borough Courthouse, which was built between 1904 and 1915 and has been empty since the city stopped using it in the 1970s.

The art exhibit opens at 1:00 p.m. and has a $3 suggested donation. It is called "When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out" and is put on by a group called No Longer Empty, which stages exhibits in vacant buildings around the city. Here is the exhibit website: No Longer Empty.

After viewing the exhibit, we will eat lunch outside in a nearby community garden then walk back on 161st Street to the Grand Concourse, past the Bronx County Courthouse, through Franz Sigel Park then cross the 145th Street Bridge again and return to the A,B,C,D station at 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. The 4, 2 and 5 and D lines are available along the Grand Concourse if you don't want to walk back to Manhattan. We should be back at 145th Street by 5:00.

Bring lunch, drinks and snacks. We will eat lunch outside in a nearby community garden.

Meet: 12:00 p.m. in front of the Capital One Bank at the northeast corner of 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue outside the A,B,C,D station in Manhattan. Note that the B train does not run on weekends.
