CANCELLED - Bronx Rivers and Parks: East 180th Street to Castle Hill Point

  • This hike is cancelled. The various forecasts have been improving somewhat, but all call for rain in the morning, and much of this hike is pretty far from subways and buses and shelter. I'll try to reschedule, but not sure when.

About 9 miles and 5 hours. We'll walk through seven parks along the Bronx River and East River in the south Bronx, beginning at the East 180th Street station of the 2 and 5 trains and ending at Castle Hill Point, where we will catch the Bx 22 bus to the Castle Hill stop of the 6 train.

This combines the last one-third of the Bronx River 233rd Street to Soundview Park walk with an extension along the East River. Lots of trees, cool breezes along the water, nice views across to Queens.

Starting at East 180th Street, we'll visit River Park and see the dam with the eel ladder, walk through Starlight Park, once a fabulous amusement park, then to Concrete Plant Park, then underneath the Bruckner Expressway to Soundview Park, where we will have lunch.

The Bronx River empties into the East River at Soundview Park, so we'll turn east and walk along the East River in Soundview Park, Harding Park, which is a neighborhood, not a park, then along the Shorehaven Bike Path to Kane's Park in Classon Point, where Betty Boop first booped (and maybe stole her boop from a more talented performer!). Then through Pugsley Creek park and finally down to Castle Hill Point park and Zeraga Avenue, where we will catch the Bx 22 to the Castle Hill stop of the 6 train.

Bring lunch, water, snacks, a hat and sunscreen. We will eat lunch in Soundview Park. We will stop at a questionable deli just before Soundview Park, it's good for drinks and packaged food but I would not recommend purchasing anything made at the deli.

Meet: 10:30 a.m. outside the East 180th Street stop of the 2 and 5 trains.
