URBAN HIKING SERIES-GW Bridge to Tappan Zee Bridge

We will start on the Manhattan side of the GW and cross back and forth. After a quick detour to the highest natural point in Manhattan and Fort Tryon Park , we will head up the Hudson River Greenway to the northern tip of Manhattan. At that point will cross UNDER the Henry Hudson Bridge and head east along northernmost Manhattan through Inwood Park until we reach Broadway. At that point we will turn left and make our way across the Broadway Bridge into The Bronx.

We will head -up Broadway -with perhaps a detour or two-  and make our way through Kingsbridge and Riverdale to Yonkers before we veer onto the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. This trail, which lies above the aqueduct which supplied water to NYC beginning in the 19th century, will carry us adjacent to many of small towns in Westchester County to our final destination, the Tappan Zee Bridge which has no pedestrian crossing. Along the way, we will have some spectacular views of the Hudson River, the Palisades as well as many historic sights, while having easy accessibility to the Metro North. The trail is basically pretty flat.

The total distance will be about 20 miles and the estimated time to complete is about 7 hours. There will be 2-3 minute water breaks about every hour, bathroom breaks as necessary,  and a lunch break at about the halfway point. There are many bailouts as we wind our way through NYC. Once we get to Westchester, we will be adjacent to the Metro North; there are seven stations along that piece of the trek which is about 9 miles. If you are unsure you can do this, get your a** out there. You can and with the support of the group, you will. This is a great chance to test yourself mentally and physically while discovering new parts of NYC and the surrounding area. Look forward to seeing you all.

Meet:  In front of the church on the northeast corner of 179th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. Take the A train to 175th Street or the 1 train to 181st Street, from 181st walk south to 179th Street and west to Fort Washington Avenue.
