Great Saunter 2012

Under grey skies and temperatures in the high sixties, perfect conditions for a 32 mile saunter, 892 people, some coming from as far as Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia, and others throughout the continental United States participated.  Five hundred eighty eight people completed the 2012 Great Saunter.  And a special special mention for Clarence Blair, a young 78-year-old completing this 32-mile walk through the park.

Become a Hike Leader

If you have an interest in becoming a Walk Leader, I urge you to consider letting us know.  As a Walk Leader, you will meet interesting people and help folks keep physically fit as you introduce them to your favorite sites.   And you will find that leading people who are walking together to see various parts of the New York City shoreline or other locales is a lot of fun.   If you have not led a hike before, you may want to go as a co-leader on one of the Shorewalker hikes which interest you and speak to the Leader.   For more information, please contact Ellen at This email address is being protected from spambots. WALKING BY WATERS is a collection of mostly urban, waterfront, color photos taken from 1984 to 2010, mainly of shore areas most New Yorkers know nothing about. These extraordinary photos were snapped mainly by Cy Adler, founder of Shorewalkers, Inc. Great Saunter 2011 Was A Success!

Congratulations to the 800-plus participants in this year's Great Saunter, more than half of which completed the entire 32-mile trek! 

Great Saunter 2012 is scheduled for May 5th (always the first Saturday), but we hope you'll continute shorewalking throughout the year. Check out our Schedule for a list of upcoming hikes.
