Triboro to Queensboro

A moderate-paced 12-mile hike along the East River, with great views of the river, bridges, islands and various landmarks.  We will walk up the East River Greenway, across the Ward's Island Bridge, across the Triboro Bridge to Astoria, along the East River parks and then across the Queensboro Bridge back to Manhattan.

The walk will take about 6 hours; there are numerous drop off points once we reach Astoria, which will be about 4 miles and two hours into the walk.  We will start at Carl Schurz Park then walk Ward's Island, Astoria Park, Socrates Sculpture Park, Rainey Park and Queensbridge Park.

We will mostly be walking on flat, paved paths and sidewalks, but each of the three bridges has steep walkways, the Triboro Bridge has multiple stairways, the walkway across the Triboro Bridge is high and narrow so you may not want to try it if you are wary of heights.

The first drop off point is the N train station at Astoria Boulevard.

After eating in Astoria Park, we will take a walk through the park and along Shore Boulevard, across the terrace behind Shore Towers to Whitey Ford Field, along the Astoria House promenade to Socrates Sculpture Park, then  a rest stop at the Costco snack bar and restrooms.

We will then walk behind the Costco into Rainey Park, south along Vernon Avenue to Queensbridge Park, and across Vernon Boulevard to the walkway leading to the Queensboro Bridge.

Additional drop off points before crossing the Queensboro Bridge are the F train and Tramway on Roosevelt Island, the F train at 21st Street, the 7 and N trains at Queensboro Plaza and the E and R trains at Queens Plaza.

Once we reach Manhattan, we will continue the walk along 60th Street to the N and R station at 3rd Avenue and the 4,5 and 6 station at Lexington Avenue.

Please bring snacks, lunch and drink. We will stop at a deli after crossing the Triboro before we eat lunch in Astoria Park but the deli can be quite slow preparing lots of sandwiches so if you can carry what you eat and limit what you get at the deli to drinks and prepared foods that will make the day go faster.

Meet: We will meet inside Carl Schurz Park, by the restrooms at the East 87th Street and East End Avenue entrance. Take the 4,5,6 train to 86th Street.
