Bear Mountain Bridge to George Washington Bridge via the Batt to Bear Trail

NOW STARTING AT 6:00 A.M. INSTEAD OF 5:00 A.M. YAY! After doing the first part again, the calculations are more refined, the total hike should be about 45 miles: 23 miles from Bear Mountain to Nyack and 22 miles from Nyack to Manhattan. So, we'll get another hours sleep and enjoy the day more.. Starting very early at the east side of the Bear Mountain Bridge, all the way through Rockland County and the Palisades and then over the George Washington Bridge.

Starting at the east side of the Bear Mountain Bridge, we'll cross the bridge, walk south on 9W to the Jones Point Path, continue along 9W to Stony Point Battlefield, then along local watefront roads to Haverstaw, to the Hook Mountain bike path, then North Broadway into Nyack, to the Old Erie Path, through Tallman Mountain State Park, then the Long Path all through the Palisades to Exit 1 of the parkway, where we will walk along Hudson Trerrace to the George Washington Bridge.

The most important goal of the hike is to reach Exit 1 before dark, since we can't continue along the Long Path once it gets dark. So that gives us about 15 hours to go about 45 miles. I'm not certain that we can reach Exit 1 before dark, we may at some point realize the goal is out of our reach and catch a bus along Route 9. I tried doing this hike last July with one strong hiker starting at Manitou at 8:00, which is the earliest train, and after doing 30 miles in 10 hours we realized we wouldn't make it out of the Palisades before full dark and caught the bus. Starting ttwo hours earlier should give us a good shot.

We won't be stopping anywhere for lunch, bring what you want to eat and we'll eat as we walk. We will pass various stores and restrooms along the way. Drop off points along the way will be buses along Route 9W.

Meeting: 6:00 a.m. at the Bear Mountain Inn, originally 5:00 a.m. but the hike is more like 45 miles than 50 miles so we'll get our rest to enjoy the day more. There is no public transport available that early, though you can take the last train to Peekskill then a cab to Bear Mountain. I'm staying at Bear Mountain Bridge Motel about a mile north of the bridge, 845-446-2472, $72, but they only have 5 rooms.
